GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - President Barack Obama continues to lead GOP nominee Mitt Romney in Michigan, though a new EPIC-MRA poll shows the race tightening.

Obama leads Romney 48-45, with 7% either undecided or refused to answer.

The poll of 600 people was taken Oct. 4-6 and has a margin of error of 4%. The first presidential debate was held Oct. 5, and by a 66-12 margin, respondents said Romney won the debate.

This same poll shows US Senator Debbie Stabenow with a 20-point lead over GOP nominee Pete Hoekstra. Her 55-35 margin is her largest of the year, and shows a 6-point gain in a month -- at the same time Hoekstra lost 3 points.

Inside the demographics:

In Michigan, Obama leads Romney 47-44 in women and 48-45 in men. Among men aged 50 and older, Obama leads 50-41, and holds a 51-44 margin with women 50 and older.

Romney leads among men aged 18-49 by a 48-44 margin.

Obama leads in West Michigan 49-42.

With voters who said their financial situation is "good," Obama leads Romney 59-35. But with voters who said their financial situation is "bad," Romney leads 57-34, and by a 48-45 margin with those who said their finances are "in the middle."

Obama holds a 56-38 edge with voters making less than $50,000, and by a 51-42 margin with those making up to $100,000. With voters who earn more than $100,000, Romney leads 53-44.

This EPIC-MRA poll was conducted for WOOD TV8 and our media partners.
