How will Mich handle a health exchange?

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - President Obama's re-election made one thing clear: The Affordable Care Act will remain the law of the land.

That means many states - including Michigan - are scrambling to figure out how they'll try to comply with the law, most immediately over how to deal with the healthcare exchanges.

Those exchanges are the clearing house where people will be able to compare insurance policies and companies while shopping for the best plan for their families.

States have until Friday to tell the federal government how they'll handle their own exchange. Some states are simply refusing to deal with it and will leave it up to Washington.

But some Michigan Republicans, while uncomfortable with Obamacare, say at the very least the state should control what it can.

The GOP controls both the Michigan House and Senate and would have to approve an exchange. Gov. Snyder said that's what he favors, but the legislature won't have time to act before Friday.

Snyder could ask for a federal extension and hope to get the legislative action done in the lame duck session. Or they could opt to do a joint session, or simply let the federal government do it.
