MASON, Mich. (AP) - State House Speaker Jase Bolger is asking a court to reject a request for a one-person grand jury to decide whether to charge anyone with crimes stemming from a lawmaker's last-minute switch to the Republican Party.

The Detroit News reports the Republican declared his innocence Monday in a letter to Ingham County Circuit Court judges.

Last week, the Democratic leader in the Michigan Senate filed a complaint in Mason. Sen. Gretchen Whitmer of East Lansing asked for an investigation into Grand Rapids Rep. Roy Schmidt's switch to the GOP just days before the filing deadline for the Aug. 7 primary. Last month, a prosecutor decided not to file charges.

Schmidt recruited his son's friend to be his Democratic opponent, and Bolger worked to have Schmidt make the switch.
