LANSING, Mich. (WOOD) - Organizers say their plan to put before Michigan voters in November a proposal aimed at ensuring access to safe home care for senior citizens and people with disabilities is moving forward.

Backers of the ballot proposal announced Thursday they'll file 550,000 signatures with the secretary of state's office.

Called the Keep Home Care a Safe Choice proposal, it would establish a registry of home care providers who have passed criminal background checks.

The proposal also would give home care providers access to job training opportunities.

Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon says in a statement that "Michigan seniors and persons with physical challenges deserve peace of mind knowing that their home care providers have been fully screened."
