GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) -- Vern Ehlers, who has represented the 3rd District of Michigan in Congress since 1993, will hold a press conference at 10 a.m. Wednesday to discuss his future plans.
24 Hour News 8 learned State Rep. Justin Amash from Cascade is running for the seat Ehlers currently holds. Amash, a Republican, represents the 72nd District, representing Kentwood, Caledonia, Cascade and Gaines Township.
"I have no expectations about who is going to run or who is not going to run," Amash told 24 Hour News 8 on Tuesday. "I made up my mind on the basis that I had something to bring to the table, so whatever happens, I'm committed to running a strong race."
A spokesman in Ehlers' office would not elaborate on the congressman's plans, but said Ehlers, 76, would speak Wednesday morning.
Speculation swirled Tuesday night over the idea that Ehlers may not run for re-election.
Ehlers' office refuses to confirm the rumors.
If he decides not to run, the primary could be a big one, with many well-known political names taking a look at the race.
24 Hour News 8 will continue to follow this developing story.
