GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) -- A 4.3 earthquake shook northern Illinois Wednesday morning, a quake that was felt into southwestern Michigan.
The quake occured about 5 a.m. ET, said Randy Baldwin of the US Geological Service in Colorado. It was centered about four miles north-northwest of Virgil, Illinois, and was felt in Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana and Iowa.
Baldwin told 24 Hour News 8 the quake was "serious enough to be felt widely, but there are no reports of damage." Most reports said the quake shook for no more than five seconds, and felt similar to the vibration of a passing truck.
This was a shallow quake within the upper three miles of the Earth's crust.
He said this is not an active area for earthquakes. There was a minor quake in June 2004, and a previous quake in 1985.
