Higher winter natural gas heating bills

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan utility regulators say residential heating bills for natural gas users are expected to be slightly higher this winter due to likely increased consumption.

The Michigan Public Service Commission released its winter energy appraisal Friday. The commission forecasts adequate energy supplies this winter.

The forecast is based on weather returning to normal from last winter, when energy consumption was below normal.

Customers using propane for heating, however, are likely to see little change in heating bills because a drop in prices will offset likely higher usage.

In Michigan, 77 percent of households heat their homes with natural gas and 9 percent use propane.

Overall, annual demand for natural gas, electricity and propane are projected to increase. The commission says motor vehicle gasoline consumption likely will decrease.
