The aim of the tree-related investments is to improve water quality. The grants will support community forestry efforts to improve the interception, evaporation, infiltration and storage of rainfall and storm water.

Projects include $250,000 for Detroit-area reforestation led by the nonprofit The Greening of Detroit and $250,000 for tree planting in Flint at the site of General Motors' former "Chevy in the Hole" complex. Other Michigan projects are in the Detroit and Grand Rapids areas, as well as the Upper Peninsula.
