Snyder: MI can improve at recycling

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder says Michigan should do better at recycling waste, and his administration will develop a plan for improvement.

In a special message on energy and the environment released Wednesday, Snyder said Michigan has one of the Midwest's lowest recycling rates.

Michigan has a deposit program for drink bottles and cans, but Snyder says that's not enough. He says the state should find creative ways to cut back on waste overall. He said he would offer a comprehensive plan in 2014.

Kerrin O'Brien of the Michigan Recycling Coalition says the governor's plan is welcome news. The group says if Michigan could recycle 30 percent of its waste as many neighboring states do, it would boost the economy and create thousands of jobs.
