WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) - Michigan is the eighth-fattest state in the country and not getting any slimmer.

There are about 10 million people living in Michigan -- 6 million of them are considered to have a weight problem, and one-third is considered obese.

It costs the state big money to get involved with weight issues.

In 2008 Michigan spent about $3 billion in obesity-related medical costs, which are your tax dollars.

State officials claim unless something changes, that amount will skyrocket to $12.5 billion in 2018.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder was at the Family Fare at Metro Health Village, 2275 Health Drive SW in Wyoming Wednesday afternoon to unveil Pure Michigan FIT.

It is an initiative that will give Michigan residents tools and resources to incorporate healthy eating habits and physical activity into their daily lives.

The state last week launched a new website to help as well.

When Gov. Snyder took office he launched Michigan Dashboards to provide quick assessments of the state’s performances in key areas including: economic strength; health and education; value for money government; quality of life; and public safety. It currently shows obesity is up in the state's adult and high school rankings by more than a percent.
