LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A Republican state lawmaker has introduced legislation recommended by GOP Gov. Rick Snyder aimed at overhauling Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan.
Senate Insurance Committee Chairman Joe Hune introduced bills Wednesday that would end the nonprofit health insurer's tax-exempt status and align it with competitors. Snyder said last week he aims to "level the playing field" for insurers and modernize Michigan's insurer of last resort, which serves 4.4 million residents.
Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation Commissioner R. Kevin Clinton told the Senate panel the measures are driven by the federal Affordable Care Act, which takes effect in January 2014.
Blue Cross wouldn't be sold or lose its nonprofit status but would become owned by policyholders.
The plan requires approval by the Legislature and Blue Cross' board of directors.
