Schuette: Suspend NE pharmacy license

New England Compounding Pharmacy targeted

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette is asking regulators to suspend a license that allows a Massachusetts pharmacy to do business in the state.

Schuette is targeting New England Compounding Pharmacy, which is blamed for a rare meningitis outbreak in Michigan and other states. Officials believe contaminated steroids injected for back pain spread a fungal form of the illness.

Michigan has at least 39 cases of meningitis, including four deaths. One of the deaths involved a Cass County woman who was treated for back pain across the state line in Indiana.

Schuette said Friday that New England Compounding was licensed only to fill prescriptions for individual Michigan residents, not manufacture drugs. Four Michigan clinics used steroids shipped by the pharmacy. Schuette's complaint will be handled by the Bureau of Health Professions.
