223 Michigan West Nile cases; 13 deaths

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - As November approaches and cooler temperatures settle in Michigan, state health officials still are keeping track of West Nile virus.

The Department of Community Health says there have been 223 cases through Friday, including 13 deaths. There were only 34 cases in all of 2011.

Southeastern Michigan leads the way, with 36 cases in the city of Detroit and another 55 cases outside Detroit in Wayne County. Washtenaw, Oakland and Macomb counties combined have 61 cases.

Kent County, which includes Grand Rapids, has 44 cases of West Nile. The virus is spread by mosquitoes. People most vulnerable to death are the elderly and those with other ailments.
