LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan House Judiciary Committee has approved legislation to give the state Department of Community Health more power to outlaw synthetic marijuana substitutes and other designer drugs.

Tuesday's vote came as Detroit joined a number of communities in banning the sale of K2 and other forms of synthetic marijuana.

Mayor Dave Bing's office says the order calls for the immediate end of any distribution of products or substances containing synthetic marijuana and also bans the sale of bath salts.

Bing says the substances will be seized and anyone selling them prosecuted.

Macomb County officials have issued health violations related to products sold under brand names including "Spice" and "K2." And Oakland County's West Bloomfield Township has made the sale of synthetic marijuana illegal.
