Medical marijuana rally in Lansing

To protest proposed restrictions on the practice

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Supporters of medical use of marijuana have called a rally in Lansing to protest proposed restrictions on the practice in Michigan.

The Michigan Medical Marijuana Association president and others are scheduled to speak at the rally, which is set to start at noon Wednesday on the state Capitol steps.

In 2008, state voters approved use of marijuana to relieve pain and other chronic ailments. About 100,000 people have state-issued cards letting them have 2.5 ounces of "usable" pot and up to 12 plants. Registered caregivers also can grow marijuana for five people.

Michigan's Appeals Court has ruled some sales at dispensaries illegal.

Changes proposed by some Michigan legislators requiring stricter doctor-patient relationships before a patient could get authorization to use the drug.
