MARINETTE, Wis. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Carl Levin and his wife, Barbara, are to take part in a keel-laying ceremony for the USS Detroit, a combat ship that will be built near the Wisconsin-Michigan boundary.
The event is scheduled for Thursday at the Marinette Marine Corp. shipyard in Marinette.
Barbara Levin is the ship's sponsor. She's to authenticate the keel, which generally is the first part of a ship's hull to be constructed.
Congress in 2010 approved the Navy's plan to buy new advanced combat ships, including 10 from Marinette Marine Corp.
