LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The leader of the Republican-controlled state House says it won't approve a bill that would have required that women undergo vaginal ultrasound examinations before they get abortions.
House Speaker Jase Bolger issued a statement Thursday after introduction of a bill to mandate pre-abortion ultrasound examinations with the most-sophisticated equipment available.
Bolger says he wants to "increase the value of life" but has "absolutely no interest in forcing a woman to have a transvaginal ultrasound."
Similar legislation has failed before.
The Detroit News says a state Senate bill would prohibit insurers from funding abortions under plans provided by businesses and organizations. It would permit elective abortion coverage.
Gov. Rick Snyder has vetoed an overhaul of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan because of an anti-abortion rider.
