Meteor showers peak Thursday night

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - It could be raining meteors in the West Michigan sky Thursday night, as one meteor shower may be joined by another.

The Geminids will peak overnight Thursday night with the moon at its new phase. The skies will thus be free of the moon's glare, allowing viewers in rural areas to see perhaps 100 or more meteors per hour , experts say.

And Bill Cooke, the head of NASA's Meteorid Environment Office, told MSNBC.com that "(m)eteors from the new shower (if any) will be visible in the early evening, with the Geminids making their appearance later on and lasting until dawn."

If this new shower does arrive, it may produce up to 30 meteors an hour by itself, he said.
