Feds: Ways to block Asian carp

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - Federal officials say they've compiled a list of possible methods for preventing Asian carp and other invasive species from migrating between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins.

Scientists and engineers from a number of federal and state agencies put together the report, which officials are releasing Wednesday.

Gary O'Keefe of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the list includes more than 90 technologies and devices in 27 categories.

Among them is physically separating the two watersheds, the method preferred by five Great Lakes states that are suing the federal government to demand quicker action.

After the public has had a chance to comment on the list, officials say they'll narrow it down and choose the best options.

The plan targets a variety of organisms, not just Asian carp.
