70 clerks miss absentee deadline

LANSING, Mich. (WOOD) - Secretary of State Ruth Johnson said a federal lawsuit is in the works after 70 local city and township clerks missed state- and federally-mandated deadlines to provide absentee ballots to military and overseas voters.

According to a release from the Secretary of State, military and other overseas voters who request absentee ballots must receive them 45 days before the election.

Johnson has ordered clerks in affected clerks to immediately contact absentee voters to offer replacement ballots.

In the event legal action is taken, clerks who missed the deadline will have to allow extra time for receiving and tallying affected ballots.
