LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The White House says Michigan stands to add 109,000 jobs once President Barack Obama's federal stimulus plan takes effect.
In West Michigan, the stimulus is projected to add nearly 37,000 jobs.
Obama was to sign the legislation Tuesday in Denver. His administration says the $789 billion package will create or save 3.5 million jobs nationally over the next two years.
Council of Economic Advisers Chairwoman Christina Romer and Obama's chief economist, Jared Bernstein, estimated the number of jobs creating by studying the stimulus package's effect on working age population, employment and industrial composition in each state.
Michigan's two Democratic senators and eight Democratic U.S. House members voted for the package. But none of the state's seven Republican congressional members did. They say it creates too much debt and not enough jobs.
