GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Law enforcement throughout the Midwest will be cracking down on impaired drivers starting today through the holiday weekend.

The Midwest Regional Administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Michael Witter said that in "2009 410 people were killed in a car crashes in the United States. Out of those 410 people 40% had a driver with a blood alcohol level of .08 or higher."

Witter also said that "law enforcement throughout the Midwest and around the nation will be out in full force cracking down on drunk drivers during the Fourth of July holiday period with an aggressive Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest. enforcement blitz,”

He also provided a few tips on how people can stay safe over the holiday weekend.

One tip, plan a safe way home before your festivities start.

Also before drinking, pick a designated driver and give that person your keys.

Use services like a taxi or public transportation to get home safely.

Witter also encourages people that see drivers that they believed to be impaired to call police.
