GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Michigan authorities are asking people to keep their eyes peeled for any suspicious behavior with the anniversary of 9/11 just around the corner.
But what does it really mean to be on the look-out for terrorism?
24 Hour News 8 spoke to people at the West Michigan Healing Field Friday night to find out. The Healing Field is a temporary tribute to the nearly 3,200 people killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Each victim is represented by an eight foot flag with a placard that says something about the person it represents.
"The impact of the number, it's always hard to grasp what 3,200 is," said Coni Huisman. Huisman said she came to the Healing Field because she wanted to understand, and have empathy for, the victims and their families. "And it's larger than I would have expected. Just visually and the uniformity of the flags and what they represent, it touches you in your heart, and I don't think I'll forget it."
In the face of such a visual reminder of the terrorist attacks, Huisman said she still believes in one thing -- "you can't live in constant fear. That's no way to live." Huisman told 24 Hour News 8 that she hopes other Americans feel the same way.
"We are asking people to continue to live their lives like they normally would," said Michigan State Police spokesperson Nicole Lisabeth. "But just to remain vigilant, be aware of your surroundings, and don't hesitate to call authorities if you see something suspicious."
According to the M.S.P., there is no known threat to the state of Michigan on this anniversary of the September 11 attacks. However, officials said they still want citizens to stay vigilant.
"I think it means that I'm not looking for anything specific but if I see something strange, if I notice anyone acting in a strange way or if I'm suspicious about something, than I wouldn't just keep it to myself," explained Huisman.
State troopers are hoping people will report anything strange they might notice in their communities.
Here is some information from the Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division that points out seven signs of terrorism to watch out for:
1.) One of those is to note if someone looks suspicious and seems out of place
2.) People or organizations trying to gain information about military operations or people
3.) If you notice someone trying to measure reaction times or testing security, especially at a public event
4.) If you notice someone buying or stealing supplies (i.e. weapons or other controlled items)
5.) If you notice someone recording or monitoring something without a valid reason. That could include someone using a video camera or binoculars
6.) If you notice a person or group that looks like they are doing a trial run
7.) If it seems like people or supplies are getting into place to cause a disturbance
If you notice any or all of these things police want you to contact them immediately.
"As the eyes and ears of their community, they're going to be the first ones to know whether something seems out of place whether something suspicious in behavior or activity we're asking people if something seems out of place or doesn't belong to please notify law enforcement so they can look into it," added Lisabeth.
Several agencies told 24 Hour News 8 spoke with Friday evening said it is important for you to be aware, but not scared. Agencies would rather have more calls, than less, so there is no need to hesitate to call, even if you only have a hunch.
