CALEDONIA, Mich. (WOOD) - Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson arrived at a motorcycle safety news conference on a Harley, then showed proposed new motorcycle plates to an enthusiastic crowd.

Johnson thanked Farmers Insurance for their continued dedication to motorcycle safety. The company has partnered with the state motorcycle safety program to provide parking lots, classrooms, storage space, and other resources for motorcycle safety at no cost.

"The best way Michigan motorcyclists can stay safe on the road," she said, "is to get trained and licensed, wear the proper gear and share the road."

Motorcycles are becoming more popular on Michigan roadways, jumping by 50,000 in the last four years. Around 553,000 people ride motorcycles in the state.

In order to earn a motorcycle endorsement, riders must successfully complete a knowledge test and a safety course or skills test.
