TOWN OF TAYCHEEDAH, Wisc. (WLUK/WOOD) - A Michigan motorcyclist died, eight other bikers were hurt, and a car driver was also injured in a crash on a Wisconsin road, according to WLUK.
The wreck occurred Thursday afternoon on Highway 151 near Welling Beach Road in the Town of Taycheedah, WLUK reports.
A car crossed the center line and crashed into 10 of the 12 motorcyclists, according to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department. All of the bikers were wearing helmets and it is not known if alcohol was a factor in the crash, police said.
The sheriff's department has released names of those injured in the wreck, including the motorcyclist who died -- 59-year-old Daniel Lee Winsemius of Twin Lake.
The other bikers who were hit by the vehicle --
Two of the bikers were not involved in the collision --
The car driver is a 25-year-old from Hilbert, Wisc. A medical helicopter took him to a hospital in critical condition. He is now in fair condition, as of Friday afternoon, and once he is released he will be taken to jail on charges of negligent homicide and felony bail jumping, according to the sheriff's department.
24 Hour News 8 talked to friends of Winsemius and they said he was a member of the Muskegon Motorcycle Gang, which has been around since the 1970s and may be better known as MMG. The motorcyclists involved in the wreck were on an extended cycle ride and headed home from the promoted and listed MMG event.
Rescue crews extricated the car's driver from his vehicle at the crash site. Three motorcyclists and the driver were airlifted to a hospital for treatment. Ambulances took five bikers to a hospital after they suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
A public prayer vigil for the biker s will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Heritage Landing in Muskegon. Donations will be accepted at the event to help pay for airfares to bring some of the injured bikers home to West Michigan.
This is not first time tragedy has struck the Muskegon Motorcycle Gang. JoAnn Corbin, 56, died in a crash during a charity ride in North Carolina in August 2009. The MMG held a fundraiser May 28 in her honor.
