ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (WOOD) - An apartment resident was rescued from a smoke-filled residence after being unresponsive on a couch.
The St. Joseph Department of Public Safety received a call about smoke coming from under the door of an apartment and filling the hallway at Westview Apartments, 2704 Lake Shore Dr. in St. Joseph.
Residents were exiting the four-story building when firefighters arrived at 9:13 p.m. Wednesday, as light smoke was coming out of the exit doors.
Maintenance staff told firefighters the fire ignited from a stove on the first floor of an apartment, and the tenant was unresponsive on a couch.
Maintenance staff tried to enter that apartment but was forced out from smoke conditions after disconnecting kitchen area power and trying to rescue the tenant, according to a news release.
Firefighters entered the apartment and extinguished the fire and rescued the tenant who was treated at the scene and transported to Lakeland Hospital St. Joseph.
Other residents were evacuated as a precaution and temporarily taken to other buildings of the apartment complex.
