COLUMBIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A mail carrier is credited with alerting some sleeping homeowners to a fire at their Van Buren County residence.
Ricki Gillan saw the fire on her way to work Saturday morning, called 911 and was able to wake up the residents.
Columbia Township firefighters responded to the unidentified scene at 7:48 a.m.
The fire chief arrived as one of the homeowners went back inside the residence to retrieve some personal belongings, according to a news release. The fire chief had to enter the house to get the victim out.
This resident was transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo for unspecified injuries.
It took about an hour for firefighters -- also from Bangor, South Haven and Bloomingdale -- to extinguish the flames.
