COLDWATER, Mich. (WOOD) - A Florida suspect being held in a Michigan jail escaped from the facility in Branch County and was later recaptured.
Cody Barber, 19, was in temporary holding pending an extradition hearing for a probation violation out of the Lake County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office.
Branch County corrections officers were in the process of investigating pounding noises in the jail when a cellmate alerted them that the suspect had escaped through a window.
Officers called for assistance at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, went outside and saw the suspect's footprints in the snow.
Officers then told other law enforcement agencies about Barber's escape.
A Coldwater police officer noticed someone, matching Barber's description, walking along State Street in Coldwater.
Barber ran from the officer and was later chased down and arrested by Coldwater officers and deputies from Branch County.
Barber was returned to the Branch County Jail, and will face new charges of escape, destruction of police property and resisting arrest.
