BANGOR TOWNSHIP, Mich.(WOOD) - A driver who was likely intoxicated may have lied to police about how his vehicle went off a road, rolled over and hit a utility pole that caught on fire late Friday afternoon.

The driver was unhurt and able to exit the vehicle before rescue personnel arrived at the scene around 5:20 p.m. in the 62000 block of M-43 in Bangor Township.

Police said the driver had been consuming alcohol and driving with an expired driver's license.

A witness told police the driver was traveling erratically in the westbound lanes and that it was foggy at the time of the crash.

The driver told police another vehicle pulled out in front of him near County Road 687 and M-43, causing him to lose control of his vehicle. The driver was unable to describe that other vehicle, and the witness refuted the driver's version of what happened.

The driver who crashed is now in the Van Buren County Jail on charges of operating while intoxicated causing a property damage crash, and driving with an expired license.
