GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The former comptroller of a southwest Michigan grocery chain allegedly embezzled more than $6 million and bought more than 50 American muscle cars during a period of more than seven years.

Christopher Earl Pratt faces federal charges of mail fraud related to an ongoing scheme to defraud Village Market Centers and take their money and property.

In federal court in Grand Rapids, prosecutors allege Pratt made unauthorized transfers from the chain for payments on his personal credit cards and to "finance an extravagant lifestyle" between December 2004 and May 7, 2012.

Among the vehicles he bought with some of the money --

  • 14 Ford Mustangs
  • 7 Chevrolet Chevelles
  • 4 Dodge Challengers
  • 5 Chevrolet Camaros
  • 4 Jeep Wranglers
  • 3 Buick Skylarks
  • 2 Plymouth Barracudas
  • 1 Plymouth Fury
  • 1 Pontiac GTO
  • 1 Ford Torino

Allegedly, he sent Village Market Food Centers checks through the US mail to cover his personal credit cards. Prosecutors cite three specific instances with checks totaling about $120,000.

Federal authorities seek forfeiture of at least $6,548,706 from Pratt.

If convicted, Pratt faces up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and other fines and penalties.

The FBI is investigating the case.
