MATTAWAN, Mich. (WOOD) - Funeral services were held Monday for a Mattawan firefighter who died suddenly while on the way to the scene of an explosion.
Nate Fruin went into cardiac arrest on Feb. 26 while on the way to a fire at a Mattawan residence and died at a Kalamazoo hospital.
Fruin was remembered by other firefighters as an all-around good person who always had a joke handy and who was good with computers.
Funeral services began with a Final Salute at 1:30 p.m. and a Mass at 2 p.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Portage.
A procession including Mattawan Fire Department vehicles left the church following the service and escorted Fruin's body past the fire station and then to the cemetery.
Once in Mattawan, the procession was met by a throng of people from the close-knight community who came to honor Fruin.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Great Lakes Burn Camp, Inc., Mattawan High School Performing Arts, or the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
Condolences may be left at Fruin's obituary page.
