GENEVA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - Following a serious crash, a woman traveling with her young son told police she was probably too intoxicated to drive.
Crystal Rose, a 25-year-old Paw Paw resident, had her license previously suspended eight times, with at least two prior convictions, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Department.
The woman admitted to police that she consumed 1 to 1.5 pints of whiskey before getting in her car Thursday evening.
"I mean it don't sound like something she would do, but I guess she admitted it," her brother, Adam Smith, told 24 Hour News 8. "I mean, I dont know."
She was driving with her 5-year-old son on 60th Street near Eighth Avenue in Geneva Township around 11:40 p.m.
Rose was driving her mother's Chrysler Sebring when it crossed the center line and went into the opposite lane, then off the road and struck a tree, police said.
There were no brake marks found at the scene prior to impact, investigators said.
The woman was not wearing a seat belt and her son was not in a car seat but may have had a seat belt on.
She was transported to South Haven Health System and later transferred to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. Rose suffered a broken wrist, a banged up head and cuts on her body, while her son suffered a concussion.
The report on this latest incident will be forwarded to the prosecutor's office for charges of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury, driving while license suspended causing serious injury and possibly others.
" I never thought she would do something like this," her brother said. "She is a good person, a good mom and I just want to get the facts, and know the truth behind everything."
