BANGOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A 7-year-old boy was injured after being ejected from his father's vehicle and partially run over.
The man was arrested and cited for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. "The driver showed visible signs of intoxication, admitted to consuming alcohol, and was well over the legal limit," according to a news release from the Van Buren County Sheriff's Department.
The investigation reveals the man was driving his Jeep Wrangler on a relative's property near M-43 and County Road 687 around 8 p.m. Aug. 17. Police said he drove to near where some children were and told them to quiet down. At some point the man's son climbed onto the vehicle without the man's knowledge.
The 34-year-old father then drove across the street to the Bangor Conference Center and hit a pothole or bump in the parking lot. The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing his son to fall off the Jeep and be run over by the passenger-side, real wheel, police said.
Deputies say the driver then hit some sort of pothole or bump in the parking lot and lost control which caused his son to fall out of the Jeep. The child was then run over by the passenger-side rear wheel of the vehicle.
Police and rescue personnel were notified of the incident and arrived at the scene.
The child was first treated there and then taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. He suffered a fracture to his right arm and abrasions to his chest, back and left knee.
The case has been given to the Van Buren County Prosecutor's Office.
Deputies contacted Children's Protective Services and advised officials about the incident.
