ALMENA, Mich. (WOOD) - A high-speed chase suspect tried to hide from authorities in a hot tub, but a police K-9 unit tracked down and arrested the 28-year-old from Shelbyville.
Jason Wyatt faces charges of fleeing and eluding, resisting and obstructing police, driving while license suspended, operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs, operating a vehicle without valid plates and insurance, four bench warrants out of Barry County and Wayland.
A Van Buren County sheriff's deputy told 24 Hour News 8 he pulled over Wyatt's vehicle at 12:35 a.m. Wednesday near 28th Avenue and Van Kal Street in Almena Township, after unable to read Wyatt's license plate.
As the deputy walked up next to Wyatt's pickup truck, Wyatt sped away, according to a news release.
A short pursuit ensued in which police said Wyatt drove at speeds more than 100 miles per hour, and did not stop at three intersections.
Wyatt then lost control of his vehicle near 44th Avenue (M Avenue), causing the vehicle to go off the road, spin in a circle and overturn several times, according to the sheriff's department.
The Ford F-150 ended on its side. Wyatt did not wear his seat belt and alcohol was not a factor in the wreck, police said.
Wyatt climbed out of the vehicle where the windshield used to be, after the windshield blew out from the crash. He then ran to a wooded area.
A perimeter was set up involving deputies from Van Buren and Kalamazoo, as well as Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers and the Mattawan Police Department.
Wyatt was found in a covered hot tub behind a residence.
