GENEVA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A 32-year-old man is facing three counts of second-degree murder among 11 felonies related to a head-on collision that killed a woman and two young children in Geneva Township.
David Glen Johnson also face three counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, three counts of operating with a suspended license causing death, operating while intoxicated causing serious injury and operating while intoxicated causing death.
Tuesday's crash in Van Buren County resulted in the deaths of 24-year-old Brittney Renee King of Bangor and 2-year-old Kandice Berryhill and 4-year-old Cassadi Berryhill, both of South Haven.
911 calls reveal that witnesses could immediately tell the crash was bad.
"There's a bad crash in front of the Gingerman racetrack on 388," one caller tells dispatchers.
When a dispatcher asks if anyone is hurt, the caller responds, "Oh, yeah. Yeah, there are some people hurt."
Help wasn't far away. South Haven's police chief happened to be in the area and was one of the first on the scene.
Johnson remained in the hospital Thursday, but he is recovering and is expected to be released in fairly soon.
Officials told 24 Hour News 8 Johnson has expressed feelings of remorse.
Police officers are posted outside Johnson's hospital room. He has not been arrested yet, but that is expected to happen immediately after he is released from the hospital.
Family members told 24 Hour News 8 they believe Johnson has a drinking problem and he has twice been convicted of drunk driving.
Authorities said Johnson is from Alabama, but a court filing lists his hometown as Grand Junction, Mich .
The father of the little girls, 24-year-old Justin Berryhill, was also injured in the crash. He also remained hospitalized Thursday and is physically on the mend. Family members did say he has been having a difficult time emotionally.
Family members said Berryhill has been asking to go home and they expect he will be released before his daughters are buried.
Funeral arrangements are still pending.
