WATERVLIET TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - The 24-year-old father of an infant was charged with murder and child abuse after the baby died Monday.
Casey Ladd was arraigned on first-degree murder and first-degree child abuse in Berrien County. He pleaded not guilty.
Around 10:36 a.m. Monday, emergency responders went to Cobblestone Village Apartments, 8772 Cobblestone Road, after getting a call about an infant not breathing.
The baby was taken to Lakeland Community Hospital in Watervliet and then airlifted to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, but died soon thereafter.
Ladd was arrested right away.
Results on the autopsy performed on the 10-month-old won't be known for weeks until the toxicology results are completed. There was visible bruising on several areas of the baby's body.
Ladd's previous criminal history includes four misdemeanor charges, including an assault in 2006 and domestic violence in 2011.
He's being held in the Berrien County jail on a $1 million bond. His preliminary exam on the charges is set for August 23.
