HARTFORD, Mich (WOOD) - Nine people are behind bars in Van Buren County after cashing or attempting to cash counterfeit checks at a Hartford bank.

Employees from the National City Bank on South Center Street called police drawing their attention to the suspicious situation before noon Saturday.

When authorities arrived, they made contact with several individuals who had arrived at the bank in a van with no license plate. Police say the occupants of the van and people in several other vehicles had cashed counterfeit checks totaling more than $8,000.

Police were able to seize about $3,000 from those individuals and counterfeit checks discovered in their vehicle.

All nine people taken in to custody identified themselves with IDs from Mexico.
