CENTREVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) -- After two weeks of testimony, seven days of deliberations, and a prod from the judge to continue to seek a verdict, the jury in the Anthony and Marsha Springer trial will take a few days off before continuing deliberations on Monday.
Around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, the jury told Judge Paul Stutesman they could not reach a unanimous verdict. He asked them to deliberate a while longer.
Stutesman asked the jury if they had any questions, and they did. The question was about intent -- whether the Springers intended to harm their daughter Calista when they chained her to her bed. She died when the house burned two years ago.
Around 4:30 p.m., they told the judge they would continue to deliberate, but couldn't do so until Monday. Two of the jurors have scheduling conflicts now that the trial is entering its fourth week.
"Again, we'll see where we get on Monday," Stutesman said. "As far as that goes, you've done a lot of work. Thank you for listening to that instruction on trying to talk, and if there's anything else we can do to clarify things for you, go ahead and ask. We will try to answer as best we can."
The Springers are charged with the torture, abuse and murder of Calista.
