SAUGATUCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A recount over a proposal passed by two votes in early May was halted Friday due to a clerical error.
The Allegan County clerk was scheduled to recount the votes on an issue that would allow the county to use taxpayer money to cover ongoing legal fees in their defense over the zoning of the Denison Dunes owned by Aubrey McClendon
Officials getting ready to do the recount noticed that a tag on a bag of ballots did not match the official log. There was an objection to the recount, and three officials voted on how to proceed.
Two objected to continuing, and the recount was halted.
At this point, the original results stand. There is the possibility someone may officially appeal.
In a statement released late Friday afternoon by Singapore Dunes -- McClendon's group -- said the "recount for the May 4 Special Millage was tainted by multiple failures of the Saugatuck Township clerk to observe state election law. The Allegan County Board of Canvassers concluded today (Friday) that the ballots could not be recounted because the Township clerk failed to satisfactorily explain a missing seal on the transfer case used to secure the ballots. The Board also concluded the Township clerk failed to explain how the number on another seal was not properly recorded in the poll book.
"The Township clerk is at the center of a federal court lawsuit filed by Singapore Dunes against the Township challenging her solicitation and acceptance of substantial sums of money on behalf of the Township from local activists who seek to prevent thoughtful development on the former Denison property.
"This latest incident continues a pattern of conduct that disregards fair public process and the principles of good government," said Jim Bruinsma, legal counsel for Singapore Dunes.
Following their statement, Saugatuck Township Clerk Jane Wright issued her own statement. "I have been a faithful and honest servant to my community for 10 years and continue to be. My track record running elections has always shown I am very thoughough in regards to election law. Unfortunately, due to the holiday weekend, I am unable to contact my attorney, and therefore I am forced to decline further comment at this time."
A total of 980 people voted on May 4 . By a vote of 491-489, the proposal asking for a 0.5 mill increase for two years to help cover fees and expenses related to McClendon's lawsuit passed.
In practical terms, a resident with a $100,000 home will pay an extra $50 year, and will bring in nearly $127,000 per year.
