GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The Kalamazoo County man who died last spring in a helicopter crash ran out of fuel, investigators say.
Larry Boven, 68, had only owned his helicopter for one day when it went down into some trees.
That day, he fueled up in South Bend, Ind., putting 48.5 gallons in a 68.5-gallon tank. Boven flew 82 miles to his home in Comstock Township, and then to a small airport in Paw Paw. He picked up a flight instructor and practiced maneuvers for about an hour, before dropping the instructor off and heading home.
Boven was not having any problems with the helicopter during practice, according to a report. But right before he arrived at the landing strip on his property, a nearby hiker heard the helicopter's engine shut off, then the sound of the impact.
