PAW PAW, Mich. (WOOD) -- A police officer and two other people were hospitalized after being involved in a crash on a snowy West Michigan highway.
Authorities from the Van Buren County Sheriff's Department, Paw Paw Police Department and Michigan State Police Post in Paw Paw were investigating numerous slide-offs and accidents on I-94 from the Lawrence exit to Mattawan.
The crashes at about 10 a.m. Monday were due to the extremely icy and snow-covered road.
Paw Paw Police Officer Eric Rottman was at one of the wrecks -- a semi-truck that jackknifed into the median barrier cables near the Paw Paw exit ramp.
The driver of the truck, Balvir Bohugan, 33, of Brampton, Ontario, was not injured and got into the back seat of the officer's vehicle as crews cleared the scene. Officer Rottman sat behind the wheel of his vehicle, waiting too.
Then, the driver of an approaching, westbound vehicle lost control, causing the vehicle to go sideways and rear-end the officer's car.
Byoung Kim, 48, of Mount Prospect, Ill. was driving the other car and Suh Yung Kun, 46, of Korea was in the passenger seat.
Officer Rottman and the Kims were taken to a hospital after suffering minor injuries.
Bohugan was unhurt.
Byoung Kim was cited for driving too fast for the conditions and not having a driver's license.
