NRC keeping closer tabs on Palisades

COVERT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says it will continue extra inspections of the Palisades nuclear power plant in southwestern Michigan despite concluding the plant has taken care of safety problems.

Regulators say in a report Friday that the plant in Van Buren County's Covert Township has "adequately addressed" problems identified last year. But additional oversight is needed to ensure that the remaining corrective actions are properly carried out.

Palisades spokesman Mark Savage says the plant has worked closely with the commission and will continue to do so.

Palisades was designated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission as one of the nation's four worst-performing nuclear plants. It has experienced a series of safety problems.

The report stemmed from a follow-up inspection conducted a team of regulators in September.
