SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) - Call boxes will be installed on South Haven beaches as part of a settlement following the drowning of an Illinois man.
In August 2009, 45-year-old Martin Jordan of Saint Charles, Illinois, was swimming with his family when they all got caught in a rip current.
Jordan helped his family members and some other swimmers make it to safety, but he did not survive. Witnesses were able to pull him to shore, but Jordan was pronounced dead in the hospital a short time later.
The family sued the City of South Haven. As part of a settlement agreement expected to be finalized within a few weeks, the city will install 911 call boxes on the beaches to contact the police and fire departments.
The city hopes to have the boxes installed by Labor Day.
