LEE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - Burning candles caused the house fire that killed a two-year-old and injured two other children early Thursday morning.
Lee Township Fire Chief Nelvin DeWeerd told 24 Hour News 8 the fire marshal determined the fatal fire that took the life of two-year-old Scott Bogseth was caused by burning candles.
The home was without benefit of electricity due to the heavy wind storms the night of the fire. Family members of Bogseth were using the candles while they were waiting for power to be restored.
Chief De Weerd said initially the family said they thought the candles were all out but later said some of them remained burning.
The fire marshal completed his report Friday. DeWeerd said, "The way the fire spread through the house, the fire marshal determined it was the candles."
