LIVONIA, Mich. (AP) - A man went to his 17-year-old ex-girlfriend's suburban Detroit home, where he axed her mother and new boyfriend to death and injured the girl, then killed himself with a shot to the head Wednesday, police say.

The girl called Livonia police about 12:20 p.m., saying two people were dead and she was injured, according to Lt. Thomas Goralski.

Goralski identified the killer as Brian D. White, 19, of Livonia. White killed Angela Staperfene, his girlfriend's 46-year-old mother, and her new boyfriend, Jacob L. Burns, 19, of Livonia, the lieutenant said.

Both died of axe blows to the head, Goralski said in a statement.

White also attacked his ex-girlfriend before committing suicide, Goralski said. He said she was treated at a hospital and released.

"Our hearts do go out to the families of the deceased," Mayor Jack Kirksey told the Detroit Free Press. He called the case a "great tragedy."

White and the girl broke up recently, Goralski said.

Neighbor Lisa Collins said White had confronted the girl earlier in the week at school and she had rejected him.

"He was very controlling," Collins told The Detroit News. "That's why she broke it off with him."

Livonia is a city of about 100,000, about 15 miles west of Detroit.
