DETROIT (AP) - A jury has convicted former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick on corruption charges after a five-month trial that portrayed him as a greedy politician who took bribes, fixed contracts and lived far beyond his salary.
Kilpatrick was convicted of 24 charges, including racketeering conspiracy, tax offenses, extortion and bribery. His friend and city contractor Bobby Ferguson was also convicted. Kilpatrick's father Bernard was found guilty only of a tax crime.
Detroit federal Judge Nancy Edmunds ordered Kilpatrick be held in jail until he is sentenced.
The verdict is another defeat for the man who left office in 2008 amid an unrelated scandal involving sexually explicit text messages and an affair with an aide.
The government said Kilpatrick rigged city contracts to help his buddy Bobby Ferguson, and then got a share of the spoils. Witnesses said Kilpatrick got bribes and kickbacks from his political fundraiser and a convention center contractor. He was also accused of tapping a nonprofit fund for personal use.
The judge said she knew Friday that jurors had tentatively agreed to convict the former mayor.
Judge Edmunds says jurors wanted to go home for the weekend before announcing the verdicts Monday. She says she looked at the 22-page form in general but didn't pore over each charge last week.
The judge tells reporters that it's not uncommon for a jury to sleep on a verdict.
