DETROIT (AP) - Detroit officials say the city had 386 criminal homicides in 2012, up about 12 percent from the previous year.

Mayor Dave Bing on Thursday was joined by police officials in announcing the total, up from 344 from 2011.

Robberies and car thefts also were up. However, overall crime was down by more than 2.5 percent.

There were 461 death investigations last year, up from 414 in 2011. Of the 2012 total, 25 were ruled justifiable homicides. The others last year included accidents, suicides or natural deaths.

Shootings accounted for 333 of last year's criminal homicides -- up from 302 in 2011 and 254 in 2010.

Interim Police Chief Chester Logan says, "America has a problem with guns, but the epicenter seems to be here in Detroit."
