LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - The Jackson County sheriff says the 4-year-old son of one of his deputies was accidentally shot and killed at the family's home.

MLive.com reports that Sheriff Steve Rand says the shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the deputy's home in Liberty Township. It's about 10 miles south of Jackson.

State police are investigating the death.

Rand says the deputy was heading to work when his wife called from home and told him what happened. The names of the child and the deputy haven't been released.
