DETROIT (AP) - Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has been transferred to a low-security federal prison for men in Milan.
Kilpatrick was transferred Friday from the Oaks Correctional Facility near Manistee, where he had begun serving 18 months to five years for probation violations on June 8.
James Thomas, Kilpatrick's lawyer, said access to research facilities and a computer will better allow his client to prepare a defense against federal fraud and tax charges.
The Detroit News says the Milan prison located about 15 miles south of Ann Arbor is spread over 300 acres and features basketball and tennis courts, horseshoe pits and a softball field.
The facility's 1,500 inmates include Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian accused of attempting to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day.
