GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) - An airman who lived in Grand Haven and Grand Rapids has died in California.

Staff Sgt. Donald G. Norvell, 30, died Wednesday, according to the Nadeau Family Funeral Home.

Though initial media reports said Norvell died during a training accident, the Air Force told 24 Hour News 8 on Tuesday that is inaccurate. The 60th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs office said the death happened off-base and remains under investigation by local authorities.

Norvell's obituary says he died "unexpectedly" at his Vacaville, Calif. home.

Norvell's obituary says he was a precision measurement equipment laboratory specialist at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, Calif.

Funeral services are expected to be held Friday.

The Air Force released the following statement on the death Tuesday:

"There has been an active duty member death off base. The member is Staff Sergeant Donald Norvell. The cause of death is under investigation, and the base is working with local officials. Travis is a close-knit family and we are all experiencing this sorrow together. Our thoughts and prayers are with Staff Sergeant Norvell's family and friends. Right now, our efforts are focused on providing the support and assistance needed during this difficult time."
